Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease. A key feature of this disease is that impaired alpha-synuclein accumulates in a type of brain cell known as dopaminergic neurons in patients with Parkinson’s disease. In a new study, researchers from research centers such as Columbia University Medical Center and the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology found the first direct evidence that autoimmune responses play a role in Parkinson’s disease. This finding makes it possible to prevent neuronal death in Parkinson’s disease with therapies that undermine this immune response. Relevant research results published online in Nature.
