Singles are happy to be single, believing they’re more open to new experiences, and in better physical shape than couples, according to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive. Survey results were released in honor of National Singles Week, Sept. 16-22.
Asked to compare themselves to married couples (or couples living together) 88 percent of the singles surveyed said they were happier or just as happy as their “coupled” peers(同龄人). Also, 51 percent of singles said they were more open to new experiences while 33 percent at least as open to them.
Also, according to the survey findings, 78 percent of singles believe they are more or equally physically fit than their “coupled” peers. In their careers, 81 percent of the singles believe they were about as successful or more successful than the couples they knew. Some 61 percent of the singles surveyed said they were more self-indulgent(放纵的) than their “coupled” peers.
Finally, 71 percent of the singles surveyed said they felt more or at least as financially secure(经济稳定的) as the couples they knew.
“Singles, according to this study, perceive a lot of positives in their lives when they measure themselves against their married peers,” says Caroline Presno, commenting on the survey findings, “singles are seeing their lives as more of an adventure.” Presno is a psychotherapist(精神治疗医师) and author.

The ups and downs of life may seem to have no predictable plan. But scientists know there are very definite patterns that almost all people share. Even if you’ve passed some of your “prime”, you still have other prime years to experience in the future. Certain important primes seem to peak (达到高峰) later in life.
When are you smartest? From 18-25, according to I.Q. scores; but you’re wiser and more experienced with increasing age.
You’re sharpest in your 20’s; around 30, memory begins to decline. But your I.Q. for other tasks climbs. Your vocabulary at age 45, for example, is three times as great as when you graduated from college. At the age of 60, your brain possesses almost four times as much information as it did at the age of 21.
When are you happiest? You have the best physical sense of yourself from 15 to 24; the best professional sense from 40 to 49.
Before age 24, we believe that our happiest years are yet to come; over 30, we believe that they’re behind us.
When are you most creative? Generally between 30 and 39, but the peak varies with different professions.
Mozart wrote a symphony (交响乐) and four sonatas (奏鸣曲) by age eight, and Mendelssohn composed (创作) his best known work A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at 17, but most of the great music was written by men between 33 and 39.
Though the peak in most fields comes early—most Nobel Prize winners did their top research in their late 20’s and 30’s—creative people continue to produce quality work throughout their lives. For the “well-conditioned mind”, there is no upper limit.
1. When do we have the largest number of words? ____.
A. Between the age of 18 and 25
B. In our twenties
C. At the age of about 30
D. At the age of 45
2. What does the underlined word “it” mean in the third paragraph? ____.
A. The age of 60 B. Your brain
C. Information D. The age of 21
3. How many questions did the writer raise in the passage? ____.
A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five
4. When do we feel happiest? ____.
A. Before the age of 24
B. After the age of 30
C. At a certain time between the age of 24 and 30
D. Before age 24 and after age 30
5. When does the peak come for creative people? ____.
A. Between the age of 8 and 17
B. Between the age of 33 and 39
C. In their late twenties and thirties
D. All of their lives

Are You Getting Junk Sleep?
充足的睡眠对每个人都非常重要,尤其是青少年,可是有些同学却有些不良习惯,严重影响睡眠的质和量。请对照下文看一看你有这方面的问题吗?
We all know the kind of sleep you get when you decide to go to bed with a TV on. It’s not good. But I like the name the Sleep Council in Britain gives to the kind of sleep teens get when they go to sleep watching TV, listening to music, or using other electronic devices: “junk sleep”.
A survey(调查) of 1,000 kids, aged 12 to 16, found that 30 percent go on four to seven hours of sleep a night, far from the suggested eight or nine or more.It is reported that nearly all of the teenagers surveyed had a phone, music system, or TV in their bedroom and two-thirds of them had all three. In 2005 a study found that 26 percent of U.S. teens spent time online in their bedrooms, and that’s two years ago.
A sleep physician said, “We’ve seen an increase of the night-owlism(“夜猫子”主义者) in teenagers.” Research shows that teens’ internal clocks shift toward much later sleep times, and that leads to some problems—especially when they have to get up early for school.
The physician put forward some recommendations to help teens sleep better. For starters, she tells parents to take TVs out of teens’ bedrooms, enforce turn-off times on PCs and phones—every tech device except music players. She encourages teens to listen to music at night—but tune into a soothing(令人舒畅的) playlist, on low volume, which helps them relax and go to sleep.
1. According to the passage, the word “junk” has the similar meaning with ____.
A. useful B. of little value C. old D. unwanted
2. It showed that 30% of the surveyed teenagers slept at least ____ hour/hours less than suggested time.
A. one B. two C. four D. five
3. Which of the following is wrong? ____.
A. More teens will sleep more hours year by year
B. Fewer teens will have enough sleep as time goes on
C. More than a quarter of U.S. teens spend time online in their bed rooms in 2007 than before
D. More teens have difficulty getting up early for school
4. All but ____ should be taken out of teens’ bedrooms to help them sleep better.
A. TVs B. phones C. PCs D. music players
