With the development of a global economy, the number of multinationalcorporations is increasing rapidly and their business fields are expanding.InChina, especially after its entry into the WTO, more and more managers,executives, technicians, and employees will be working in multiculturalenvironments.Cross-cultural communication is unavoidable for staff membersis by no means an easy thing as cultural differences between countries canhave a profound impact on the way in which business is conducted.Becauseof this, an awareness of and an appreciation for cultural differences are amongthe most difficult and challenging tasks in conducting business with peoplefrom different cultures.This thesis aims to discuss cross-culturalcommunication in multinational corporations.Its focus is on the importance ofincreasing cross-cultural awareness for those working in multinationalcorporations.It consists of four interrelated parts.In part one, knowledge ofcross-cultural communication is reviewed theoretically to indicate that moreand more people in business world will engage in cross-culturalcommunication.In part two, multinational corporations, as ideal settings forcross-cultural studies, are defined and their communication characteristics areexplained to show that cultural differences are the barriere to cross-culturalcommunication.Then cultures influence on business organizations iselaborated.In part three, contrastive studies of different management styles,negotiation styles, and business protocols are made to indicate that differentcultures have different ways of doing business.After that, business cases areanalyzed in an attempt to prove that cross-cultural awareness plays adetermined role in business success in international market.The analysis iscarried out through applying approaches and principles of cross-culturalcommunication.And finally, the guidelines and approaches for increasingcross-cultural awareness are introduced and suggestions are put forward so asto help staff members of multinational corporations to reach a high degree ofcross-cultural awareness.Theories of cross-cultural training approaches areapplied to serve this purpose.
