China have become a major attraction for cross-border students9 mobility since 1950 that the first group of 33 international students visited China.Among international students,South Korea has been the main resource of international students in China followed by the United States,Thailand,Pakistan and India.In 2017,79,199 South Korean students,more than the number of its students in the U.S.,studied abroad in China including Hong Kong,Macao,Taiwan.Among whole South Korean students in China,25,759 students pursuing degree programs,accounted for 33 percent,in contrast with 18 percent among 142,886 South Korean students participating in degree programs all over the world.Among all selected host countries,why has China become the most preferred country of South Korean students?Based on a combination of in-depth interviews and questionnaire survey,this study at general approach level and analytical approach level seeks to examine the choice of South Korean college students in the context of cross-border mobility towards China and suggests two findings as follows:First,four primary reasons(e.g.International/Intercultural experience,Improved foreign language skills,Improved employment opportunity and Higher quality education),that South Korean students consider overseas study,in general are found;Second,based on statistical analysis,general understanding of China(e.g.culture,economic growth,Chinese language),and the information of university,especially concerning Scholarship,drive South Korean students towards China as a study-abroad destination.These findings indicate that China’s prosperous economic development performance,as well as its high-level of material(e.g.culture,Chinese language and information of Chinese institutions)rewards for foreign students,contributing to its attraction of South Korean students.It is essential for the Chinese Universities to improve the high education quality in the long term to compete with other top universities all over the world.
