It is reported that there are various prevalence of suicide behaviours in different population, such as adolescents, women, elderly people, and so on.The goal of this symposium is to exchange the study results from community-based studies on suicide in China as there are more and more studies on this field.The session consists of 4 presentations with new research results from studies carried out in China.Type of studies is cross-sectional community-based population study.The contents of the presentations cover topics as suicide ideation and related factors among the elderly people, risk factors of suicidal ideation among the users of community health service, lifetime prevalence of suicide ideation, plan, and attempt, and relationship between suicide and mental disorders in community population in Beijing, China.All these topics are rather new data in China.It is very important to study social, psychological, demographic and cultural factors related to suicide.Regarding study methodology, epidemiological methods, such as cross-sectional study, case-control study, cohort study, and even community intervention study are applied.As it is very difficult to carry out an epidemiological study on suicide ideation in community, limited data should be utilized for research, policy making, and health education, in maximum range, in order to gain our ends of health promotion.
