  In modern engineering the main focus is to reduce structural weight.However, light-weight structures are characterized by low internal damping, leading to a higher risk of static and dynamic instabilities.One possibility to overcome this negative effect is to integrate piezoelectric layers into these mostly plate-or shell-like structures.The piezoelectric layers can be used to sense the deflections or vibrations and to control the response of the structure accordingly.
