Heterosis or hybrid vigor refers to the phenomenon that hybrid of two inbred lines exhibit greater biomass, growth rate, and fertility than its parents. This phenomenon has been exploited extensively in crop breeding and has been a powerful force in the evolution of plant specification.Despite it has been under investigation for nearly a century, the genetic and molecular bases of heterosis is still not well understood. We previously identified a C2H2 zinc finger gene SlZFP2 that regulates plant growth through modulation of multiple hormone signaling pathways. Here,we investigated its possible role in regulation of heterosis in rice and Arabidopsis. The rice OsZFP2 gene is mainly expressed in nodes, inflorescences and seeds at 5days after pollination. We also found the expression level of OsZFP2 in F1 hybrids was in between their reciprocal parents.Similarly, the Arabidopsis AtZFP2 also showed differential expression among Col,C24 and their F1 hybrid.Sequence analysis on OsZFP2 genomic region revealed that there are abundant SNPs and indels in the promoter region and 3 untranslated region of OsZFP2,which likely contribute to its expression changes.Functional analysis of the role of ZFP2 in heterosis is under investigation.
