The objective of the current study was to investigate the potentiality of Korean native cattle for in vitro embryo production after cumulus-oocyte complexes retrieval using ovum pick over 4 months period.Ovum pick up were performed on ten Hanwoo cows at intervals of 3-4 days.Number of follicles present on both ovaries of each animal was counted in addition to number of each grade of cumulus-oocyte complexes retrieved was recorded.Cumulus-oocyte complexes collected from each animal were matured, fertilized and allowed to develop in vitro and the morphological quality of embryos was evaluated.The results of the cu,rrent study showed that the average number of follicles of each animal available for aspiration throughout the experiment was about 18.37 ± 0.32 and this number was 19.13 ± 0.64 on the first month; however follicles aspirated at the fourth month of ovum pick up dropped to 16.89 ± 0.67 at the last month sessions.Moreover, the average number of cumulus-oocyte complexes retrieved was 10.40 ± 0.30 in all sessions while this number was greater at the first month sessions 12.53 ± 0.57 it was decreased drastically (P ≤ 0.05) to 7.28 ± 0.57 at the last month.Consequently, the embryo production potentiality of each cow was reduced significantly from 4.84 ± 0.31 at the beginning of ovum pick up session to 3.13 ± 0.32 blastocysts at the month of the experiment.The present study suggests that long term ovum pick up of Korean native cattle could drastically impact the embryo production capacity in vitro.
