The hydration of propene for the production of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is usually conducted at temperatures ranging from 130 ℃ to 190 ℃ and pressures between 60 and 100 bar.At these conditions, the reactants propene and water form two liquid phases or one supercritical and one liquid phase. An acidic ion exchange resin is used as solid catalyst. The reaction takes place in the aqueous phase surrounding the catalyst. In case of drying out, unwanted side reactions like polymerization of the olefin occur.
