The gut microbiota has been demonstrated to be actively involved in diverse physiological and pathological processes in their hosts through interacting with host cells. This microbial organ also shows tremendous metabolic capability in catalyzing diverse reactions of many different types of chemicals, in particular, the hydrolysis of glycosides from natural products, yet it receives much less attentions than the host metabolic systems in the drug discovery and development pipeline.
