The development of smart structures and composite materials with sensing and actuation capabilities have received increasing attentionover the past two decades.Incorporation of piezoelectric fibers/rods in polymer matrix materials leads to composite materials with sensing and actuation properties.A composite of piezoelectric materials have been widely used in smart structures and other applications such as electromechanical sensors,ultrasonic transducers,hydrophones,micropositioning devices,non-destructive testing,vibration suppression,noise control and structural actuators.The development of piezocomposites applications requires an understanding of electro-mechanical responses of piezocomposites.Performance and reliability of piezocomposites are governed by the interaction between the piezoelectric phase and surrounding matrix material,which is controlled by the material properties of the two phases,interfacial properties and volume fraction of the piezoelectric phase.
