Neutral insects of some plant fields are neither pests nor enemy insects for the plant. They are an important part for arthropod communities and a key food in an agro-ecosystem.Field trials were conducted in 2013 and 2014 at Longyan,Fujian province,China,to evaluate the effects of garlic,Allium sativum L.,as an intercrop on neutral insects in flue-cured tobacco fields. The results demonstrate that a total of 5385 and 10765(in 2013 and 2014,respectively)individuals representing 5 families and 7 species were collected from the tobacco fields. The families with the highest numbers of species were Culicidae and Formicidae. The family with the greatest number of individuals was Chironomidae.Species richness of neutral insects in tobacco monocultures was significantly higher than in intercropped fields. However, species abundance of neutral insects in monocultures was not significantly different than the abundance in intercropped fields. The diversity of neutral insects in tobacco fields might be affected by intercropping garlic. The species Chironomus sp.was found as dominant species. The abundance of all neutral insects was 96.15%in 2008 and 85.97%in 2009.The species abundance of Chironomus sp.was not consistent in intercropped fields.Consequently, the results of this study do not support the natural enemy hypothesis. The study suggests that the species abundance and diversity of neutral insects were not consistent in intercropped fields.
