Pain has sensory and emotional dimensions.Whereas the sensory dimension stems from somatotopical analysis of the origin and intensity of the nociception, the emotional dimension defines the aversiveness of the nociception, urging individuals to avoid life-threatening situations at various time-scales.Recent morphological analyses revealed that the major target of the spinal lamina I neurons with C fiber inputs and ascending projections is the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPB), which then sends excitatory projections to the capsular part of the central amygdala, a nucleus playing pivotal roles in aversiveness-linked emotion.
