EucommiaUlmoidesOliv.mealwas subjected toautohydrolysis and organosolv delignification process. The fundamental chemistry of lignin involved in this process was investigated by comparing the structural features of dissolved lignin and milled wood lignin(MWL)extracted from the pretreated substrates. The molecular weights, thermostability, chemical composition, and structural inhomogeneity of the lignins were comprehensively investigated by gel permeation chromatography(GPC),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),FT-IR spectroscopyandnuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy(31P-,13C,and 2D-HSQC NMR techniques). Results showed that the lignin fractions exhibitedmuch lower molecular weight and polydispersity as compared to corresponding MWL.NMR spectra further revealed that the lignin fractions were mainly composed of guaiacyl(G)andsyringyl(S)units.Quantitative NMR analysis suggested that the content of β-O-4linkages was decreased after autohydrolysis pretreatment and further organosolv delignification process. The high-purity lignin isolated from the integrated process had relatively low molecule weight and polydispersity as well as high phenolic hydroxyl groups. Moreover, thermal analysisindicated that both the “carbon residue” andmaximum decomposition temperatureof the lignin enhanced from the integrated process.
