Streptococcus pneumoniae is the major causative organisms of meningitis, bacteremia, and pneumonia.Recently,multy-drug-resistance strains of S.pneumoniae which are resistant to penicillin,broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotics showed ascending tendancy. The antibiotic resistance of S.pneumoniae continues to increase.Hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase catalyzes the conversion of hydroxylmethylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) into mevalonate, the rate-limiting step in isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) biosynthisis. The mvaA gene is essential for the growth of the gram-positive pathogen S.pneumoniae.
