  Formic and acetic acids are the major low molecular weight earboxylie acids in the troposphere (Chebbi and Carlier, 1996; Khare et al., 1999).Due to their property of high hydrophilicity, they are usually analyzed by liquid chromatography, ion chromatography in particular, for the purpose of concentration measurement (Dabek-Zlotorzynska and McGrath, 2000).For determination of the stable carbon isotopic composition of the acid, however, separation of the organic acids by the gas chromatography (GC) is required because the isotope ratio mass spectrometer(IRMS), which is used for the subsequent measurement of the carbon isotopic composition, is coupled with a GC, forming the instrument GC-IRMS, which is getting increasingly popular in the measurement of compound-specific isotope compositions (Ferchaud-Roucher et al., 2006).
