H2S sensing characteristics of nanocrystalline SnO2 films prepared by the aqueous sol-gel method

  Tin oxide (SnO2) is a widely used gas sensing semiconductor material.The conventional sol-gel method is unfit for coating SnO2 films on top of metal electrodes for the sol will corrode the electrodes due to the strong acidity.The microstructure and H2S sensing properties of tin oxide films on alumina and quartz prepared by a new aqueous sol-gel method were investigated in this paper.The synthesis process is simple and compatible with the electrodes on the substrate.The results showed that the films are porous and made up of nanoscale grains with sizes from 15 to 2O nm.High sensitivity and good selectivity for H2S detection have been achieved.The highest sensor response (the ratio of resistance in air versus in H2S) was 27000 (on alumina) and 58057 (on quartz) under H2S concentration of 13.7 ppm at 60 ℃.The reason why the sensitivity of the films on quartz is higher than the films on alumina is also discussed in the paper.
