The future of humankind will be an urban future. This fact is too often ignored or even just wished away.In 2008 more than half of the worlds population was already living in cities. At that time in Japan already 90% and in Latin America more than 80%.Even for Africa it is estimated that in 2030 more than half of the population will live in cities. The more successful we are in improving the productivity in agriculture we will need less people to work in agriculture.Less and less people will be able to earn a living in rural areas. In many countries people who cannot find employment in agriculture will come to cities to work in construction or industries. The consequence of this process is an ongoing restructuring of the spatial distribution patterns of population and human activities.
