Liquidambar formosana Hance.was used as a famous Traditional Chinese Medicine for treatment of carbuncle,herpes,swelling ulcer,hemorrhinia and toothache.In order to further elucidate the chemical composition of the leaves,barks and heartwoods of L.formosana,we have investigated their chemical constituents with GC-MS.The main components of leaves were identified as phytol(34.843%),hexadecanoic acid,ethyl ester(17.282%),9,12,15-octadeca-trienoic acid,ethyl ester,(Z,Z,Z)-(14.544%),2,6,10,14,18,22-tetracosahexa-ene,2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyl-,(all-E)-(10.015%),phenol,2,2-methylenebis[6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-methyl-(8.261%),linoleic acid ethyl ester(4.354%),and cinnamyl cinnamate(44.048%),vitamin E(10.661%),linoleic acid ethyl ester(9.759%),2,6,10,14,18,22-tetracosahexaene,2,6,10,15,19,23-hexamethyl-,(all-E)-(8.462%),benzyl cinnamate(5.321%),phenol,2,2-methylenebis[6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-methyl-(3.556%) were the main constituents of barks.Cinnamyl cinnamate(68.885%)γ-sitosterol(5.380%),benzyl cinnamate(4.116%),hexadecan-oic acid,ethyl ester(3.614%),2,5-pyrrolidinedione,1,3-dimethyl-3-phenyl-(3.481%) were enriched in heartwoods.
