A novel automated quantifiable and graphical format for Irwin test

  Objective Irwin test is one of the most commonly used assays for pre-clinical neuro-toxicological screenings.As a descriptive assay, there are many disadvantages in its original data analysis and presentation format.Although some reported formatting improvements in the literature, it is still not quantifiable and is difficult to make side by side comparisons of different test articles.The process of data analysis is also time-consuming.Methods In order to make the parameters in Irwin test more quantifiable, we categorized the descriptive data into four, including general behaviors, autonomic and sensorimotor functions, convulsive behaviors and excitability, and reflex capabilities; and quantified them mathematically as incidence, abnormality and severity.Results Incidence refers to a frequency of occurrence of abnormal parameters.Abnormality implies percentage of abnormal rodents.And severity is a quantitative description of abnormal degree.At the same time, the onset and offset of abnormal behaviors would be recorded.Conclusion The data processing for Irwin test is cumbersome, we automated the process which makes data process error-proof.In presentation, all data were presented in clustered columns which make the Irwin test results visually understandable, comparable and quantifiable.
