A New Dispersing Method on Silica Fume and Its Influence on The Performance of Cement-based Material

  Dispersed sufficiently silica fume is able to realized its filling effect and secondary reaction of hydration better,a new dispersing method on silica fume aiming to dispersing silica fume fully is introduced.The influence of modified silica fume on performance of cement-based materials is investigated.It is revealed that silanolate groups and negative charges present on the surface of silica fume, therefore the zeta potential of silica fume surface becomes positive by reaction between silanolate groups on silica fume surface and Ca2+ ions, and the Ca2+ ions is brought into in the form of calcium salt under the alkaline environment, thereby changing of zeta potential generates stronger adsorption force to anionic polycarboxylate copolymer.In order to explain that influence of zeta potential of silica fume on the adsorption properties of polycarboxylate copolymer, the performance of modified silica fume was evaluated by measuring rheological property of paste, zeta potential and charge density as well as adsorption of polycarboxylate copolymers in cement pore solution.Results show that polycarboxylate copolymers adsorb to and disperse silica fume grains obviously through this method.Additionally, the effects of modified silica fume on rheological property, mechanical properties, shrinkage, pore structure and morphology of cement-based materials are outstanding than those of non-modified silica fume.
