@@ There are three types of negative polarity items in Mandarin Chinese: wh-phrases, renhe and NPI minimizers. They are all polarity sensitive and occur in non-veridical contexts. This paper is concerned with renhe, the counterpart of the typical English NPI “any”, focusing on its distribution and the presence/absence of dou in renhe…dou Neg construction. Apart from the canonical object position, renhe occurs felicitously in the subject position with the co-occurrence of dou and Neg. This distribution of renhe violates the left-right principle of licenser and licensee and challenges the observed subject-object asymmetry displayed by English NPIs in the presence of clausemate negation.
