An essential aspect of trade and economic life is a system of standard measures.The more valuable the commodity to be measured, the more important it is that the measure should be precise and accurate.In this paper, I shall examine the evidence for certain measures of weight used by the Sogdians and Bactrians, two of the most important groups of westerners who traded along the Silk Road.The evidence is essentially of two types.On the one hand we have objects made of silver (and occasionally gold) bearing inscriptions indicating their weight;on the other we have inscribed objects, mostly stones, which were specifically designed for weighing commodities for sale.Evidence from texts can also be valuable as documenting the units of weight in use at a particular time in a particular region, but does not usually allow one to calculate the actual value of those units.
