  Because of low mechanical strength,pure magnesium has limited applications and is usually alloyed with some elements such as aluminum,manganese,zinc and rare earth in order to improve its mechanical propertiesand/or corrosion resistance.Even so,appropriate surface treatment methodsneed to be used to further improve its corrosion resistance prior to service.Basedon the conventional anodic oxidation,micro arc oxidation is developed and widely used to fabricate a protective coating on valve metals including magnesium alloys.This paper reports our work on micro arc oxidation on Mg alloys.Pure magnesium,AZ91HP and Mg-Li were separately anodized to investigate the effects of substrates on anodizing time,surface morphology,thickness and compositions.
