Measurement of Adsorption Enthalpies for Surface Modified Carbon Black using Flow Microcalorimeter

  Carbon black has been widely used in composites,toner,resin,and ink materials.Carbon black can be characterized by particle size structure and surface functional group.Physical properties of the carbon black take effect physical and chemical properties of materials,and study unproved those of carbon black has been concededout.[1-16] FMC (Isothermal Flow Microcalorimeter,Computer Sciences Co.Lanham-Seabrook,MD.,model CSC 6825) can directly measure the heat of adsorption that is affected by physical and chemical properties of the carbon black surface and represent the interaction between carbon black and adsorbate.Several types of carbon black (N-110,N-330) were used without modification and surface modified carbon blacks were prepared via acidic synthesis.This study was carried out to evaluate the interaction between carbon black and adsorbate being measuring the adsorption properties of carbon black.Surface modified carbon black and silica were used in an attempt to compare with the experimental results.Digital HPLC pump (Acuflow series Ⅱ)was used to deliver liquid component at constant volumetric flow rates to the adsorption cell of the calorimeter.The values of adsorption enthalpies for n-hexane/carbon black,n-hexane/modified carbon black systems were obtained at atmospheric pressure and 298.15K.Since the adsorption property mainly depends on the types of functional groups on the surface,it is shown that surface modified carbon blackhas more affecting the adsorption enthalpies by FMC.
