High energy diet induced fat ectopic distributionin in tree shrew(Tupaia belangeri chinensis)

  Energy intake exceeding energy expenditure often leads to massive energy storage as fat not only in adipose tissue but also ectopic distribution in non-adipose tissues like liver,heart,muscle,resulting in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD),cardiovascular diseases,diabetes,etc.Tree Shrew(Tupaia belangeri chinensis),a lower non-human primate or a close relative of primate,have being widely used for biomedicine research for more than three decades.However,it is unknown the lipid profile and distribution in tree shrew non-adipose tissues on high-energydiet.Therefore,we fed 1-year old male adult of tree shrew high-fat(HF)diet to investigate the lipid distribution in liver,heart,kidney,muscle.We found that,compared with control diet,HF diet promoted fat mostly being accumulated in liver,led to fatty liver.On the other hand,fat content was not obviously increased in muscle,kidney and heart,indicated they have too less ability to accumulate excess fat.This study revealed the difference of fat distribution in non-adipose tissues on high energy diet in tree shrew,as well as suggest that tree shrew can be used as an animal model of NAFLD.
