This study examined maternal depression as a moderator of the effect of early child emotionality on parenting styles of 301 mothers.Mothers rated child emotionality and self-reported their depression at children age of 6 months, as well as their parenting styles at children age of 24 months. Results revealed that both child negative emotionality and maternal depression negatively predicted maternal positive parenting style, while child positive emotionality positively predicted maternal positive parenting style. When mothers displayed low depression, both child positive and negative emotionality significantly related to maternal negative parenting style.
