The transformation of normal epithelial tissue to invasive carcinomas is a multi-step process that depends heavily on interactions between epithelial cells and their surrounding stromal microenvironment.Recent studies have shown that inflammatory chemokines are highly expressed in several tumor types including prostate, colon and breast tumors, and modulate immune cell recruitment to primary tumors to regulate tumor growth and invasiveness.While studies have established the importance of chemokines in regulating the trafficking of immune cells during infection, inflammation and injury, the functional roles of chemokines in cancer progression still remain poorly understood.
