Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer) is perennial semi-shade plant belongs to Panax genus of the Araliacea family.In Korea, the Korean ginseng roots are called In-Sam, meaning like a man as they resemble the same shape our body.The main active ingredients of Korean ginseng are ginsenosides.These steroid-like phytochemicals have adaptogenic properties, which give ginseng property to counter the effects of stress.Korean ginseng contains steroids such as panaxtriol.The steroids are remarkably similar in structure to anabolic steroids found naturally in our body.Besides the well-known saponin glycosides, active ingredients of ginseng, non-saponin ingredients such as essential oil take 1~2%.The volatile components in non-glucosidal proportion may affect to the top-note of Ginseng which would be the basic data for the studies such as aromatherapy, chemotaxanomy and inspection of adulteration of ginseng products.Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) coupled to time of flight mass spectrometer (TOF MS) was applied after sample preparation with static headspace method.
