Objective Cancer is believed to arise from stem cells,but the mechanisms that have evolved by stem cells to limit the acquisition of mutations and tumor development have not been well defined.Cancer usually takes years to develop,and since many mutations are necessary for cellular transformation and short-lived progenitors or differentiated cells are often quickly lost,mutations that occur in long-lived,selfrenewing stem cells would be more likely give rise to cancer.
