Variations of hydrological seasonality in the upper Zhang River watershed, China during 1961-2012

  To gain insight into hydrological regimes of upper Zhang River watershed, a sub-basin of Hai River Basin, China, monthly runoff data from five gauges in the watershed were selected to study its seasonality.Metrics of intra-annual coefficient of variation (CV), concentration degree (CD), the period of peak flow occurrence and hydrograph patterns were calculated for analysis.The results show that: (1) Intra-annual CVs are commonly larger than 1; (2) CDs are more likely to be greater than 0.6; (3) Peak flow mainly occurred during July-October with August have more annual maximum flow; (4)The monthly hydrographs are grouped into mono-peak, bi-peak, multi-peak and irregular patterns.It indicates that: (1) intra-annual runoff deeply uneven distribution with more water occurred in summer and early-autumn especially in July to September; (2) CDs is closely inter-related to period of peak flow occurrence and hydrograph patterns, in general, higher CDs suggest that peak flow period have more frequency to occur between July to September with more mono-peak hydrograph patterns, and vice versa;(3) Higher autumn rainfall has influence in hydrograph patterns of next year which intend to be irregular pattern especially when flood season of next year suffer from drought.
