We recently attempted to prepare the 1,3-dithiol-2-one 3 from the cyanoalkyne 1 and the xanthogen reagent 2 using a known synthetic method.However the main product isolated proved to be compound 4 with the novel benzothieno-fused azatrithiapentalene ring system present.The structure of this remarkable compound as determined by X-ray diffraction, as well as the mechanism for its formation and extension of the reaction to related examples will be discussed.
