Novel Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrode with long lifetime: preparation and characterization

  For the electrochemical (EC) oxidation treatment of wastewater, it is critical to develop electrodes with high catalytic activity, long lifetime, and low cost.But the attractive Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrode has the only drawback of short lifetime, which confines its further application.Herein a novel Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrode with long lifetime, high catalytic ability and low cost was fabricated by the unique electrodeposition-thermal oxidation-brush coating-pyrolysis method.The stability and the EC oxidation capability of this new electrode were compared with the traditional Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrode.Under the condition of 0.5M H2SO4, 200mA/cm2 anodic current density and room temperature, the accelerated lifetime of this new electrode could reach 38500s, which was 20 times longer than that of the traditional Ti/Sb-SnO2 electrode.From results of SEM, XRD, EDS and coating thickness test, it can be revealed that the synergy of several factors, such as the unique pile structure morphology of the intermediate layer and the gradient distribution of tin and antimony content is the crucial reason for lifetime enhancement.Furthermore, under the selected condition, the degradation process of simulated textile wastewater (Acid Red G, 2g/L) follows the rule of pseudo-first order dynamics, and the rate constant of the reaction by this new electrode was 1.23h-1, higher than 0.90h-1 by the traditional electrode, which reflected the more excellent catalytic capability of this new electrode.
