Fracture mechanics is the field of mechanics concerned with the study of the propagation of cracks in materials. It uses methods of analytical solid mechanics to calculate the driving force on a crack to characterize the materials resistance to fracture either at slow, stable crack propagation, or fast, unstable propagation that results in fracture.Fracture mechanics recognizes that all structures are manufactured with, or will ultimately contain, flaws that govern the eventual failure of the structure, and it provides the capability to calculate the strength of structures containing flaws introduced during fabrication and occurring during service.Fracture Mechanics mechanics increases the reliability of structures resulting from improved design and improved prediction of in-service damage, and it has been applied to the design of structures when sudden, catastrophic failure would cause loss of life or other serious consequences.
