Spinosyns are unique type of macrolides produced by Saccharopolyspora spinosa composed of a tetracyclic macrolide covalently modified by tri-O-methyl rhamnose and forosamine. They are highly effectively against target insects and have an excellent environmental and mammalian toxicological profile. However, it is difficult to genetically manipulate Sac.spinosa and it also grows slow compared to other actinomycetes. As a result, improving spinosyn production and reducing the production cost is very difficult using Sac.spinosa.
