Hypoxia i.e., decreased availability of oxygen, occurs under a variety of patho-physiological conditions.Classical examples being, a) myocardial infarctions which lead to localized hypoxia and produce irreversible damage to the heart resulting in cardiac dysfunction, b) sleep apnea (periodic cessations of breathing resulting in intermittent hypoxia, IH) result in nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias including both atrial and ventricular arrhythmia.Ion channels, especially those selective for K+ ions contribute to a wide variety of cellular responses to hypoxia including cellular excitability, maintenance of membrane potential and neuronal secretion.K+ channel function depends not only on the gating properties but also on synthesis, processing and trafficking of the protein to the cell surface.
