Low Temperature Recycling Process of EAF Dust with Plastic Wastes Containing Brominated Flame Retard

  The fate of zinc,lead,and iron present in electric arc furnace dusts is investigated during thermal treatment of the dust with flame-retarded polycarbonate(PC-Br)resin containing tetrabromobisphenol A(TBBPA).Mixtures of these materials were heated under either oxidizing or inert conditions in a laboratory-scale furnace at 550 °C for 80 min.The resulting products were then characterized using X-ray diffraction,inductively coupled plasma,and ion chromatography.The results obtained indicate that inorganic bromine evolved from decomposing flame-retarded resin almost completely reacts with metal(zinc and lead)oxides present in the dust.The highest bromination rates of zinc(78%and 81%)and lead(90%and 93%)were obtained under oxidizing conditions during thermal treatment of mixture comprising PC-Br and EAF dust at ratios of 6:1 and 9:1 w/w,respectively.The metallic bromides formed were almost entirely vaporized from the solid residues.Iron remained in an iron-enriched solid residue.The results indicated that heating such mixtures under specific conditions enables a high separation of zinc and lead from iron-rich residues within an attractive temperature range.Heating under inert conditions had little effect on the effectiveness of the bromination-evaporation of zinc,but caused more abundant formation of char,decresed bromination of lead,and resulted in sporadic bromination of iron present in the dust.
