Systems approaches have been prominent in vestibular system analyses for several decades,so vestibular models might seem ideal to fulfil the current systems biology aim of identifying robust principles underlying complex biological systems (Kitano,H.(2004),Nature Reviews Genetics 5:826-837).I illustrate here the systems approachto vestibular func tion and how a recent new property,the coding of small hydrostatic pressure changes by theangular acceleration receptors was predicted using the classical comparative approach by an invertebrate model (Fraser P.J.and Macdonald,A.G.(1994) Nature 371:383-384; Fraser,P.J,and Shelmerdine,R.L.(2002) Nature 415:495-496).
