Takefu district in Fukui prefecture has a long history on forged edge tools in Japan.It is said to be the beginning of the production of edge tools in Takefu that the sword smith master named“Chiyo-zuru”who moved to this place from Kyoto for asking a suitable place for the production of swords produced a sickles for the farmers in the neighboring districts and conveyed his skills and techniques to them. The production of Japanese style edge tools are divided into two kinds of processes,that is, one is that the iron(low carbon iron metal for ground of edge tools) and the steel(high carbon steel metal for the edges) are forge-welded,and the other is that all materials for article are the steel only,named“Hon-yaki”.Its process of production is constructed with two processes of forging and sharpening.But,it is constructed with over twenty processes in exactly.But,all processes are done by hand works,accordingly the automatizations are not developed except that the forging and the forge welding by hammering with hands changed into the hammering machines by a spring mechanism using belt in the beginning of Showa era(1925-1935).The articles are produced faithfully one by one by the craftmen.
