Several types of antigens have been identified on the surface of tumor cells which can be recognized by T lymphocytes and can build the basis for immunotherapy.One such tumor antigen is MAGE-A3,a tumor-specific antigen,i.e.expressed on tumor cells only and not on normal tissues.Pilot trials have shown that the combination of MAGE-A3 recombinant protein with a GSK proprietary immunological Adjuvant System designed to enhance the immune response,could induce specific T-cell responses and long-lasting clinical objective responses in metastatic melanoma.Today,the potential of this MAGE-A3 Antigen-Specific Cancer Immunotherapeutic (ASCI) for cancer is further supported by clinical trial data and R&D data.First,the MAGE-A3 ASCI was evaluated and demonstrated encouraging clinical activity in two Phase Ⅱ trials:one double-blind,placebo-controlled trial in adjuvant Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC),and one trial in patients with metastatic melanoma.
