南海北部海域是我国海洋油气重要的生产基地之一，琼东南盆地即是位于印澳与欧亚两大板块碰撞的东缘接壤海域。十多年前，石油勘探家提出要在南海北部建设万亿方天然气生产区的雄心愿望，因此，研究解决盆地基础地质问题就显得尤为重要。
