Biochar is a carbon (C) rich material and well recognized for its environmental and agronomic benefits.Biochar technology helps to manage several urban problems ranging from handling of sewage sludge to minimization of bioaccessibility of contaminants and their subsequent bioaccumulation in food crops grown in the farmlands of urban environment.Industrialization and urbanization have dramatically increased the volume of sewage sludge (SS) produced by wastewater treatment plants throughout the world. In China, million tons of SS is producing each year and its volume is increasing day by day.Pyrolysis of SS into biochar not only reduced its volume but also minimized the available toxic metals and organic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and also killed the pathogens present in it.
