Enhancement of Upconversion Luminescence of NaYF4:Yb, Er Nanoparticles Using Silver Nanoprisms

  Upconversion of infrared radiation into visible region has been investigated for applications biological area.However,low conversion efficiency NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles have prevented application of upconversion photoluminescence(UPL)for bioapplications.Recently,the coupling of UC nanocrystals with metal nanoparticles(NPs)has been developed as a valuable strategy to enhance their luminescence.Herein,Silver nanoprisms were deployed as an internal plasmonic antenna to couple the emission of NaYF4:Yb,Er nanoparticles to the surface plasmon resonance(SPR)of the silver nanoprisms for enhanced photoluminescence.Enhancement factor for upconversion was greater than a factor of 3.This strong plasmonic enhancement effect on energy transfer can have important implications for other fluorescent too.
