In the era of sustainable development (SD),Hong Kong (HK),a well-developed and prosperous city in Southeast Asia, has been implementing various policies and campaigns to fight against the threats related to degradation of environment for decades.Regarding this ambition, green buildings movement is playing one of the major roles. But unfortunately, the performance of green building development in HK is not as satisfactory as its economic growth in the past years.According to the joint study by Greenpeace East Asia and the University of Hong Kong, the number of green buildings in HK fall behind that of Taiwan,China and Singapore. In addition to the quantity of green building, its quality is a very significant contributor to SD.The quality of a green building is not only determined by its systems and materials, but more importantly,is decided by the maintenance staff and occupantsbehaviour. In the application of behavioural study on environmental problem, research showed that widespread human lifestyle change is the core factor of sustainability. To understand possible the divers for pro-environmental behavior (PEB) to improve the performance of green buildings, this paper studied the correlation between PEBs and the psychological aspect of Quality of Life (QoL) in reference to research about the positive intrinsic consequences of PEBs.A questionnaire survey was carried out to analyze the PEBs and QoL of over 400 staff from a real estate development company in Hong Kong. The result showed that people who are more willing to do waste sorting and buy electrical appliances with Grade-1 energy label are happier (scored higher in the psychological aspect of QoL).The happiness he/she experienced was suggested to produce a positive feedback loop whereby PEBs could be encouraged.Even though this study doesnt show the causal relationship,it extends the exploration of behavioural strategies in enhancing the performance of green buildings in Hong Kong.
