Recently,Korea and Japan have been investigating low-rank coal upgrading technology using solvent extraction. The solvent extraction is the technology to separate only combustible matters from low-rank coal and has been known as environmentally sound and cost effective way to increase the quality of the coal since water in the raw coal is removed during the extraction process without consumption of excessive energy along with ash.Furthermore, the upgraded coal can be directly used, hypothetically,in agas turbine since it does contain only trace-amount of ash. However, there is still small amount of sulfur (100 to 1000 ppmw) present in the upgraded coal which might cause corrosion in blades and boiler component during combustion. Therefore, the remained sulfur needs to be removed for further improving coal quality.Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) has been recently developed desulfurization adsorbent with catalyticbehavior and the process that can be directly attached to the solvent extraction process.Because-the desulfurization condition is identical to solvent the extraction process,no further energy consumption is required to obtain low sulfur containing coal.
