Load-bearing orthopaedic implant prostheses for hip and knee replacements may beconsidered as tribocorrosion systems since the wear processes are a result of combinedmechanical and chemical mechanisms. The long-term success of these devices depends on a number of factors, including age, body weight and activity levels.Wear mapping provides a useful tool for studyinga range of wear-related phenomena underrepresentativeoperating conditions, including wear mechanisms, interactions and any transitions that may occur during the wear process.Combined micro-scale abrasion and corrosion studies are a relatively recent development in the context of implantable orthopaedic devices.Such mapping may facilitate optimization of specific material combinations for any given operating environment.
