T cell development occurs in the thymus through progressive steps of cellular differentiation, lineage commitment and selection. In brief, CD4 CD8 double-negative thymocytes develop into CD4+CD8+ double-positive thymocytes, which then give rise to CD4+ or CD8+ single-positive T cells. There has been a set of transcription factors indentified to regulate T cell development, such as Thpok, runx3.Zfp281 belongs to a novel class of transcription factor that contains a characteristic array of four kruppel type zinc fingers and are phylogenetically conserved in mammals.
