On analogy to familiar terms of generative grammar in linguistics,we can draw a distinction between surface culture and deep culture,at least to order our thoughts.Where surface culture concerns cultural practices that are the phenomena of culture, deep culture has to do with broad beliefs and values from which surface culture is partially generated. While cultural identity is commonly drawn at the level of surface culture,it is better to constitute it from a combination of the elements of surface culture and deep culture. The importance given to cultural identity is a source of social conflict. In a world where technology leverages power and the cost of weaponry declines, there are reasons to hope that rethinking cultural identity as a combination of surface culture and deep culture can help to address the sources of social conflict and motivate action to prevent social conflict,or at least to minimize it where it erupts.
