Bread wheat is one of the most important crops in the world that together with rice and maize provide the bulk of nutrition for humans and domesticated animals.Global production was 661 m tonnes in 2012, with increased consumption for food leading to a 10% reduction in global stocks. To increase wheat yields and improve yield stability in increasingly challenging climatic conditions, new approaches are being developed to utilize a far wider range of genetic variation in breeding and to achieve a far deeper understanding of genes and genetic variation contributing to agronomic traits.
