A PILOT STUDY ON THE INFLUENCE OF TAICHI ONGROUND REACTION FORCES DURING STAIR DESCENT AMONG THE ELD

  The health problems of the elderly have received an increasing amount of attention because of the gradual acceleration of the aging process.Among adults aged 65 years and above,about one-third experience fall one or more times everyyear.Fallsdo not only affect the health of the elderly,but also increase the burden on their family and society.This study assesses the influence of Taichi and dancing exercises on plantar pressures amongelderly men during stair descent.Six elderly men without bone,nerve,muscle,vision,and mental diseases were invited as subjects.These subjects did not experience any health problem within the pastyear.The subjects were divided into three groups,namely,Group A(Taichi Group),Group B(Dancing Group),Group C(Control Group).Two force plates(KISTLER9287BA,9281CA,Switzerland)were embedded in the third and fourth stairs to collect parameters on plantar pressure whendescending the stairs.The first peak pressure,valley value pressure,and the second peak pressure increased from Group A to Group C.The first peak pressure in medial/lateral direction declinedfrom Group A to Group C.The second peak pressure increased from Group A to Group C.In conclusion,Group A had little differences compared with Group B in terms of ground reaction forces.However,Group A had a significant difference compared with Group C.
